Corporal Punishment vs. Suspension
In the education system, the issue of discipline is a proper intervention in addressing in improving discipline in the schools and among the individuals. The comparison between corporal punishment and suspension in understand how to deal with student wrongdoing. Corporal punishment involves the use of physical force to deal with wrongdoings among the students. It also might include of hand or cane to discipline in the students (Gershoff, Kelly and Igor 64). For years, corporal punishment has been outlawed because of cruel and unusual punishment processes. Even though some argues corporal punishment is effective, it has some disadvantages such as causing emotional and physical harm on the students. On the other hand, suspension is an alternative way of punishment wrongdoing in the schools by sending the students home a week or two weeks. Therefore, the analysis of corporal punishment compared to suspension is improving discipline in the education system.
The proponents of suspension unlike corporal punishment explain that corporal punishment leads to injuries and trauma which is unacceptable. Many issues of corporal punishment could leave the students with beating marks and injuries. Vulnerable students expose the students to mental problems which could exist for a longer time (Gershoff and Sarah 56). Font.. In addition, corporal punishment does not deal with bad behavior and actions among the students. It only exposes the students to long-term mental problems. The ability of corporal punishment to cause trauma leads to low self-esteem and confidence among the students.
The proponents of corporal punishment over suspension argue that corporal punishment is a good alternative in promoting discipline among the students. It explains that children do not enjoy going to school. A suspension from the schools acts like a reward rather than punishment. It is because children get an opportunity to relax at their homes. However, the use of corporal punishment helps in instilling discipline and keeping children in the school. Promoting discipline in the schools is critical. Suspension of the wrongdoers looks soft and makes the children repeat the same things in the future. As a result, the corporal punishment is recommendable in dealing with indiscipline rather the use of suspension.
When a student is punished by suspension, they required to leave their work and do in collecting them the children. Corporal punishment leads to the disruption of the schedules of the parents and children. The continuous call-outs usually lead to the parents loosing much time in being unreliable. It usually leads to the damaging of the family. Corporal punishment would help in reducing time wastage of the parents (Altier 7). Corporal punishment makes it possible in disciplining the children in the schools. Based on this argument, it shows that corporal punishment gives a direct solution to the problem of indiscipline. It is because the students who violates the laws do not have opportunity to undermine the school polices and the instructions from their teachers. Therefore, corporal punishment is seen as a better way to avoid repeat wrongdoing among the students.
In summary, based on arguments for and against the two practices, it is clear that should only use suspension and avoids corporal punishment as a form disciplining the students in the schools. It is because corporal punishment is a flawed practice that does not deliver results in improving discipline among the students. Alternative methods including suspension of the students from the schools are effect in improving discipline. Corporal punishment also leads to negative physical and emotional harm that could undermine the performance of the students in the schools. Comparing the two measures of disciplining the students, suspension is highly preferable than corporal punishment which is illegal and ineffective.
